Speaker Reflection 2

Our guest speakers were Dr. Steve Villachica (Emeritus Professor of Organizational Workplace and Performance Learning – Boise State University Co-Founder – Process Management Lab) and Dr. Lisa Giacumo (Associate Professor of Organizational Workplace and Performance Learning – Boise State University). They both have had very interesting careers and have a wealth of experience and knowledge about the ID field. It was interesting to learn about the LeaPS ID Model and how they have used it to increase engagement and deliver results for their clients. They have also used it to build and expand partnerships.  This was my first experience learning about the LeaPS ID Model (included an image below of the model).

My takeaway from the speakers is that ID work occurs in multiple context bands.

Band 1: Takes place in a larger environment consisting of societies with Governments, economies, cultures, or individual citizens. Some work is local, statewide, nationwide, or global. These aspects affect organizations, ID Project management, and the activities of the projects that IDs complete. The projects that IDs create can affect the government, economy, cultures, and individuals.

Band 2: ID work occurs within organizations. People in organizations perform a collection of tasks and the organizational culture help people perform their tasks to meet their mission.

Band 3: ID work is project work and IDers need to work with clients and other stakeholders to achieve project goals. Activities may inclue scoping, planning, assessing risk, mitigating risk, communicating, scheduling, reporting, and monitoring.

Overall, LeaPS model advances ID practice by linking aspects of workplace learning and performance support. This model is flexible for all IDers and what they are trying to complete their projects. I also liked learning about the Heuristics for IDs to follow and guide them using this model. The heuristics guide the decisions that IDers make for each project and to way options to see what is best for their project. LeaPS also assumes that the organization has already completed the needs assessment and everything is in place for them to create, implement, and maintain training. No two ID projects are every completely the same!

I am still unsure if this is the type of field I want to get into. I still like the idea of the creative side of the ID field and working with a college or business in their eLearning or training programs.
