My current definition of HPT hasn’t really changed from the beginning of this course. Human Performance Technology, in my opinion, is to problem-solve ways to improve and increase productivity and performance in the workplace. The first step is to gather information and analyze what the performance problem is. Then after identifying the problem come up with solutions on how to fix the problem and increase productivity.
I have had the opportunity to do a variety of assignments in this course and I feel overall that I have a better understanding of Human Performance Technology. We read a book and articles, watched videos, listened to speakers, worked through a fast food case study, had discussions with peers, searched for available jobs in the ID and HPT field, and created our own plan through the HPT process. All of these helped me meet the goal of knowing how HPT and ID relate to each other. I also feel that the creation of my own plan helped me relate HPT to my current job role. I used a problem that we had last year to create a plan to solve the problem we had. This was very helpful and beneficial to meet the goal of how HPT can relate to my current job.
I do feel that searching through possible jobs that are available really opened my eyes to the possibilities of where I can go in the future after I graduate. I also felt walking through the steps of the fast food case study really helped me and broke down the process into easier chunks to better understand.
I analyzed myself using the competencies and characteristics of a good HPT practitioner. Below you will see my strengths and weaknesses as it relates to being a HPT practitioner.
STRENGTHS
Focused on client need | I think I have started to learn the importance of how to make client satisfied and helping them meet their goals. I showed this in the completion of both of my assignments in this course. I also do this when I work with staff at my school by listening what they need and helping them reach their goals. |
Capable of involving others | I do this on a daily basis with my job as a STEM Specialist and working with teachers. I also work with my team and we help each other with the needs of our school district. |
Determine resources appropriate for performance improvement activities and help obtain these. | In my job as a STEM Specialist I help meet the needs of teachers and students, planning and teaching lessons, co-teaching, and co-planning. We work together to find the resources that are appropriate to complete the activities and meet the goals. |
Analyze the structures of jobs, tasks, and content. | Seeing the whole picture and breaking it down is how I analyze it. I think about all the parts and how they work together. Then figure out how I can use them to meet the goal. |
Communicate effectively in visual, oral, and written form. | I have used all of these communication tactics to relay information effectively. I have provided professional development opportunities live and virtually, created visuals and slide shows, and provided flyers and emails. |
WEAKNESSES
Plan, Manage, and monitor performance improvement projects. | I feel this isn’t a weakness but something that I am still learning and working on. Over time and with practice I think this would improve. I have only done the two projects in this course. |
Promote performance consulting and human performance improvement as a major approach to achieving desired results in organizations. | I think while I am still learning about HPT and how it works it is difficult to promote and achieve results. I would need more opportunities to practice this skill. |
Organized, rigorous, and prudent. | My strong suit is not data and talking about data so I feel this is a weakness and something that I definitely need to work on for this field of work. |
Able to sort out priorities. | I tend to over-extend my thoughts and needs. I need to focus more on the needs and stick to a plan. I am technology-oriented so I feel like I need to work on thinking more outside the box at times. |
Principled yet flexible | I believe this will come with practice and more opportunities. I am used to sitting down and getting my work done and I need to learn to be more flexible and think about what others' goals and needs are. |
I will continue to use what I have learned about HPT, competencies, and characteristics in my current role as a Media STEM Specialist to help work with teachers and students as well as plan professional development opportunities.
